Thematic development means reworking an existing subject or motive into new forms. It is the core technique for building a long stretch from a single idea.

Five devices

DeviceMethodExample
transpositionrepeat at a new pitch (a sequence)see [[concept:sequence
transformationmirror / retrograde / augmentation / diminutionsee [[concept:contrapuntal-devices
fragmentationrepeat only two or three notes of the subjectthe Beethovenian hammering of a motive
rhythmic alterationkeep the pitches, change the durationsone contour becomes a march or a lament
reharmonisationkeep the melody, change the harmonyone phrase turns bright or dark

Fragmentation deserves attention: it reduces the subject to one remaining feature and then insists on it — the most effective way to build tension, and the typical writing of a development section.

The key difference from variation form

Both "work on a subject", but in opposite ways:

Thematic developmentVariation form
What happens to the subjecttaken apart and reassembledcontour preserved, surface changed
Completeness of the subjectoften brokenalways recognisable
What the listener feels"one idea being reshaped""one subject in new clothes"
Typical locationsonata development, fugal episodesa free-standing set of variations (see [[concept:theme-variations

In one line: variation keeps the subject's shape; development keeps its genes.

The test for development

One question: can the listener still recognise the subject?

CaseVerdict
recognisable, but a new form✅ successful development
not recognisable at all❌ that is not development but a new subject (structurally, a new section)
instantly recognisable, unchanged❌ that is repetition or variation, not development

"Recognisable" and "changed" must both hold — that is the calibration of development.

Why it is the key to long works

A twenty-minute movement cannot be written — or understood — from an endless supply of new melodies. The job of development is precisely this:

To carry the music far without introducing new material.

Which is the other face of a motive's capacity to develop: motives matter because development needs them.

Diagram: variation and development take opposite routes

Variation keeps the contour and changes the surface; development keeps the genes subject variation all four blocks in place — the contour survives development scattered, transposed, only fragments left Both must hold for success: still recognisable, and genuinely new in form Unrecognisable means a new subject, which structurally means a new section

Listen: contour and genes

This site's listening tools are single-voice and cannot demonstrate multi-section development. Use scale to hear a complete scale and treat it as the gene pool of a subject — every fragment in a development is taken from somewhere like this.
